Chocolate Covered Ants

Our new class shared novel is Chocolate Covered Ants by Stephen Manes

This humorous story about two young brothers and an ant colony shows 9- to 12-year-old readers how sibling rivalry can sometimes go a bit too far. When Adam gets an ant colony for his birthday, he decides to become an expert on the insect. He reads about ants at the library and impatiently waits for his new "pets" to arrive. But older brother Max is determined to get the best of his brother and tells him that some people actually eat chocolate-covered ants. Adam doesn't believe Max, and the two brothers make a bet.

Here is a video about making your own chocolate covered ants!!!!

Our author recommendations

I just adore reading. I am  I think it carries you away into another world and you can actually feel like the character. This is the reason my favourite author is Jacqueline Wilson. She writes the stories as if it's herself and explains the person's thoughts and feelings really well. Jacqueline Wilson started writing at the age of 12 without being told by anyone. I also love reading J.K. Rowling books because there is so much tension and pressure and they make your heart beat fast and your eyes move fast. You keep wanting to read more.
By Becky.

I love to read. My Mum says I'm a book worm. That's why my favourite author is J.K.Rowling. I love all the tension in her books, like in book four, The Goblet of Fire, near the end when Lord Voldermort comes back to his full power after being weak for many long years. Once you start reading J.K.Rowling's books you won't be able to stop reading them. I love J.K.Rowling's books because she really got me hooked.  By Abby

Me and my dad love reading. We love Bear Grylls!!!He is my favorite author because he is an actor, spokesperson and lots more.I love his tv programs Man vsWild because its so intense when he does amazing stuff. I love it when he finds food to eat. He's ate fish, raw fish, zebra, camel, lion, turtle and lots more. Do you know that hes faced and fighted lions, elephants, hippos, rhinos and even a giraffe!!! So back to his author apperance, I love his books like Gold of the gods, way of the wolf,Sands of the scorpion and tracks of the tiger. They are fiction. I'm reading a non-fiction book called Living Wild. Its about his life and how to survive it. So what i'm trying to say is that me and my dad love Bear Grylls.

I love reading. I have read the whole Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz.Anthony Horowitz
is my favourite author because his books are thrilling, exciting and he describes his
stories very well,so you can get a good picture in your head. Anthony Horowitz
wanted to be a writer from the age of 8.For his birthdays he wanted and got typewriters
and pencils and paper.I have read all the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz
Anthony Horowitz hooks me in from the start to the end.

R.L.Stine is the best author in the world in my opinion.
R.L.Stine is the author of Glorious Goosebumps. He makes me feel like I'm in another land.He hooks me in from the bigging to the end.I also like Jeremy Strong.

I love reading. I just love Margaret Mahy's books. I think she is great, because all her books have a great hook and a bit of humour and adventure in them. she also describes the story very well.

I ;ilr Harry Potter books.Thery are mysteries. what author do i like? ..J.k Rowling you've guessed it  she is my favourite because she hooks you in and she writes harry potter stories that are catchy .
 Ashley

I like Enid Bylton because she has good imagination and interesting books here are some, the faraway tree, the flying chair collection, secret series and secret seven and lot more so that's why i like Enid Blyton.

I LIKE bear Grylls because he is a adventurist and he likes to do risky things like
jumping of high things killing things you don't want to eat like snake
and you will not be like him because its dangerous
to do stuff like that you probably wont last two

Time capsule goes down for 50 years

The time capsule idea was part of Ashley and Beckys’ inquiry on Harewood’s History. Ashley and Becky are both in Yr 4- 9 years old.

They researched the time capsules that were discovered after the Christchurch earthquake and decided it was a great idea for Harewood School.

Mr Ambler, a plumber, donated the time capsule.

They discussed where it could go with the builder Des who was building the new lunch area.

The class took a vote and it was decided that it would be dug up again in 50 years time- that will be Harewood School’s 200th birthday. They hope that the children from Harewood School in 50 years time will be excited about opening the capsule and that it will help them learn about life in 2012.

Our Jubilee Inquiries

What was it like for the early Harewood settlers coming out from England?
Traveling on the Charlotte Jane was hard because even the doctor got sick. It was cramped in steerage. The food went mouldy. Children died on board.

The St James cemetery and church. Who are the early Harewood settlers buried in the Harewood Cemetery and why are they important to us.
I learnt lots of things while doing our inquiry. I learnt that John Stanley's fruit farm was one of the biggest farms in New Zealand.

Farming in the Harewood area.

The Waimakariri River and the Harewood area.
The Waimakariri river used to flow by Harewood School but now it flows by Shipleys farm.

What were the houses like that the early Harewood settlers lived in?
they had cob cottages, V-huts, wooden houses and they had meat hanging on the roof, one bag of flour and stools to sit on and one small table.

Why did the settlers choose the Harewood area?
The settlers came to the Harewood area beacuse it had better resources. They wanted better farmland. There was rivers and lakes. Christchurch was just a swamp. It was safer there.

When and where were the first businesses built in the Harewood area? What were the first businesses?

When was the Harewood airport first built? Why?The airport was built in 1937 but before that the airport was just scrub dirt and weeds they had a  runway in 1915 .
Christchurch Airport began international flights in 1950

What was school like at the first Harewood School in 1862 and how has it change?
The school was in the St James church across the road. They had blotting paper and got caned if they were bad.
Now we have rubbers.

Is there going to be a time capsule put down for Harewood's 150 jubilee?
Yes we are puting one down ,near the school's bell in the new lunch area. We hope the children celebrating Harewoods 200th jubilee will have fun learning about Harewood history and how it has changed.
Mr Ambler donating the time capsule-thank you
