Our Jubilee Inquiries

What was it like for the early Harewood settlers coming out from England?
Traveling on the Charlotte Jane was hard because even the doctor got sick. It was cramped in steerage. The food went mouldy. Children died on board.

The St James cemetery and church. Who are the early Harewood settlers buried in the Harewood Cemetery and why are they important to us.
I learnt lots of things while doing our inquiry. I learnt that John Stanley's fruit farm was one of the biggest farms in New Zealand.

Farming in the Harewood area.

The Waimakariri River and the Harewood area.
The Waimakariri river used to flow by Harewood School but now it flows by Shipleys farm.

What were the houses like that the early Harewood settlers lived in?
they had cob cottages, V-huts, wooden houses and they had meat hanging on the roof, one bag of flour and stools to sit on and one small table.

Why did the settlers choose the Harewood area?
The settlers came to the Harewood area beacuse it had better resources. They wanted better farmland. There was rivers and lakes. Christchurch was just a swamp. It was safer there.

When and where were the first businesses built in the Harewood area? What were the first businesses?

When was the Harewood airport first built? Why?The airport was built in 1937 but before that the airport was just scrub dirt and weeds they had a  runway in 1915 .
Christchurch Airport began international flights in 1950

What was school like at the first Harewood School in 1862 and how has it change?
The school was in the St James church across the road. They had blotting paper and got caned if they were bad.
Now we have rubbers.

Is there going to be a time capsule put down for Harewood's 150 jubilee?
Yes we are puting one down ,near the school's bell in the new lunch area. We hope the children celebrating Harewoods 200th jubilee will have fun learning about Harewood history and how it has changed.
Mr Ambler donating the time capsule-thank you
