Japanese Childrens Day

On the fifth of May it is Childrens Day in Japan. One of the things they put up this kite called a koinobori. they are a specail type of carp streamer. The Japanese people put up koinobori which is a sort of fish on a flag pole.
If you want to put up a koinobori on a pole this is the order it should go in, The black carp goes first that is the dad, the red carp goes seconed that is the mum, the last carp is the son. Sometimes if there is a daughter she is at the bottom.

In Japanese culture, the carp (or koi) represents courage and perseverance, as the fish is known for its strength and determination as it swims against the current upstream. The carp kite symbolises each family's wish for their sons to grow up brave and strong.

We have put these flags up on our flag pole at Harewood. We need some wind now!

Why We Have Easter!

I think we have Easter because of the moon. The moon is connected to Easter because there is a crater shaped like a bunny and a bunny means life in some country's. The eggs sprang up because in the Bible the rock covering Jesus tomb is shaped like an egg so that's where the eggs came from and he rose on Easter Sunday.

By Rosie

You got me wondering Rosie and this is what I discovered-there is also an Egyptian connection

It is the hare, and not the rabbit, that should be treated as the true symbol of Easter. Though both of them belong to the 'Lagomorpha' family and have a lot of  things in common, there are some differences.

Since the ancient times the hare has been a symbol for the moon. Not the rabbit. And the legend says, the hare never closes its eyes, not even for a single blink!

Easter Bunny with eggs
Bunny jumps 2

The reason for this belief may be in the fact that hares, not rabbits, are born with eyes open. Rabbits are born blind.

The ancient Egyptians related hares to the moon. The Egyptian name for hare was 'un', meaning 'open'. And they loved watching the full moon open eyed throughout the night
.
Rabbits have shorter legs and therefore move in little hops, while hares have longer rear legs and can jump far distances. Baby rabbits, or bunnies (except maybe the Easter Bunny), are helpless when they are born because their eyes are closed and they have no fur. Baby hares have their eyes open at birth and they are born with full fur; they can hop soon after they are born. Also, most rabbits live underground, but hares live above ground.

Rosies Leaving

On Thursday last day of the term I am leaving. I am going to Clearview in Rollston. Clearview is a very new school and opened last year and most likely has less students then Harewood . I am going to vist Clearview tomorrow. I am exited and sad to leave Harewood but exited to go to Clearview
