Matariki

Matariki is an especially important cluster of stars to Maori.
The Matariki stars were used to navigate, to keep time and
know what season they were in.

We shared a legend about the fish and the stars

We also made harakeke fish.Mrs Freeborn came in and taught us.
We learnt the rules when we are working with harakeke-(flax)

Respect the harakeke
Walk around it-don’t walk on it
Wash hands very well
Don’t eat or drink around the harakeke
When you learn a new Maori craft you give the first item you make away
Don’t cut flax at night time
Don’t cut flax in the rain
Maori say a prayer of thanks
Only cut enough harakeke
Don’t throw scraps away return them to the ground for compost

Only cut the older leaves from the outside-grandparents
Cut at the very bottom on a downward angle
